I connected with Kelly via LinkedIn about 6 months ago. She just so happens to work at my dream company and is only 3 years older than me. After connecting with her then, she graciously accepted my offer for a Zoom coffee informational and I was able to begin learning more about her and her career path. After this initial chat, we spoke briefly over the course of the next few months, and deciding to ask her for another interview was a great decision. I truly love and appreciate her work ethic and her dedication to being a friendly face in this industry, so we had a great interview.

Kelly’s role at Coty, a conglomerate that holds hundreds of fashion and beauty brands within it, is surround by the social media and PR tactics for Marc Jacobs (MJ) and their fragrance line. She works on a team of ten individuals who manage this product of MJ and they work to gain more engagement and publicity for the fragrance. She got this position a year after graduating from Fordham University with a Bachelors in International Studies. She had been searching for something fun and interesting and stumbled upon an internship opportunity at Coty. She interviewed and accepted the positon to work there for 8 months. After this time was up, a position opened up on her team to work full-time and she has been there since!

When I started asking about her day-to-day work responsibilities, she explained to that it has a lot to do with data, analytics, and measurement. She spends many hours on team calls and discussing SEO while diving deep into the history of engagement of this product and MJ as a whole. This seems to be her least favorite part of the job, but what she is tasked to do the most. She spoke about her favorite part, being reaching out to influencers via social media alongside creating and designing PR packages for MJ. This is something that I am very interested in because of my love for creativity!

She works mostly with influencers rather than specific postings on social media on behalf of MJ. This section of social media barely existed a few years ago, and she thinks it is so amazing that this role is now vital to the success of product launches and things such as this. She also spends a lot of time creating and managing contracts between MJ and influencers, but has not stepped into too much crowdsourcing.

Though the interview was short, we were able to go into so many interesting topics and she was really able to share her passions. On the side, she manages the Instagram page of “Baba Cool” a restaurant in NYC that has since amassed almost 10 thousand followers since she took it over. She doesn’t use any monitoring or posting tools, but she uses Instagram’s business and analytics features to check insights on activity. This side job is something she has proved to be very good at and the Instagram feed looks flawless!

I was able to learn a lot about how important it is to enjoy the work you do and I’m glad I was able to speak with her. We now have a friendship and she said she would keep me in mind for the next internship that pops up!
